After filling half the reservoir well with buffer solution and sometimes additives, the crystallization plates support the required vapor phase equilibration for supersaturated protein to crystallize. As this only happens if conditions are favourable, the low-profile plates have multiple wells per reservoir to allow simultaneous sample testing.
