In addition, <i>S. marcescens</i> is able to survive days to months on surfaces, distilled water and hand soap, making it an important pathogen in nosocomial infections and sporadic epidemics.

Omschrijving: De meeste personen die geïnfecteerd zijn met <i>salmonella</i> krijgen 12-72 uur na de infectie last van diarree, koorts en buikkrampen. De ziekte duurt gewoonlijk 4-7 dagen meegaat en het merendeel van de patiënten herstellen zonder behandeling. In sommige gevallen kan de diarree echter zo ernstig zijn dat ziekenhuisopname is vereist. Salmonella is een genus van staafvormige, Gram-negatieve, niet-sporevormende, voornamelijk bewegende bacteriën, die behoort tot de Enterobacteriaceae-familie. <i>Salmonella spp.</i> zijn een van de meest voorkomende oorzaken van voedselvergiftiging wereldwijd en zijn geïsoleerd van de meeste soorten rauw voedsel (bijvoorbeeld vlees, eieren en plantaardige producten). Hun hoge bestendigheid tegen drogen in combinatie met een zeer hoge hittebestendigheid na droging, maakt Salmonella een potentieel probleem in de meeste voedingsmiddelen, met name in droge en semidroge producten. De voedselwetgeving in veel landen bevat limieten op salmonella - meestal afwezigheid in 25 g voedsel. Bij traditionele microbiologische methodes voor detectie van <i>Salmonella</i> in voedsel en dierenvoer zijn in totaal maximaal 5 dagen nodig voor een eenvoudig ja/nee-resultaat. Innovatieve, snelle tests maken screening voor pathogene organismen eenvoudiger. Het één-staps-formaat vermindert de kans op fouten tijdens hantering.
