Halt protects against protein degradation by serine, cysteine, and aspartic acid proteases and aminopeptidases. Metalloproteases are inhibited by the optional use of 0,5 M EDTA. Een verhoogd cholesterolniveau in het bloed is een ernstige risicofactor voor beide aandoeningen. De genetische ziekte familiale hypercholesterolemie (FH) veroorzaakt een toename van het gehalte aan 'slechte' cholesterol, lipoproteïnen met lage dichtheid (LDL), in het bloed. Bij onbehandelde patiënten met het mutante FH-gen kan de aandoening vroegtijdig overlijden tot gevolg hebben. In dit experiment komt de colorimetrische enzymatische reactie aan bod die de basis is van de klinische cholesteroltest.
