Deze bouwstoffen worden op het membraanoppervlak vastgehouden en daarna in contact gebracht met de geschikte vloeibare bouwstoffen. Deze diffunderen door de poriën naar boven en zorgen ervoor dat de organismen als kolonies op de oppervlakte groeien en geteld kunnen worden.
